Las Vegas sports fans have had a lot of great news this year with the announcements by major and minor sports leagues that they are coming to Vegas, baby! As a truly metropolitan city, Las Vegas is making a statement that it’s big and bold enough to support professional sports. Las Vegas is eager to expand beyond its gaming-only image and embrace big time urban amenities like pro sports. And both local residents and tourists are embracing the idea by snapping up tickets and getting their game faces on.
NHL Expansion Team Vegas Golden Knights Off to a Great Start
The NHL awarded the city its first major league sports team in the form of a brand new major league ice hockey expansion franchise. The newly namedVegas Golden Knights enjoy a swanky new stadium on the Strip, the already buzzing T-Mobile Arena, and legions of dedicated local season ticket holders. And, boding well for all pro sports in Las Vegas, tourists are snapping up tickets as well to take in a game while they’re visiting Sin City.

We’re already proud fans of our local team. At the time of this writing, the Golden Knights have already finished off 16 games, with 10 wins, 5 losses, and 1 OT shootout loss – and are sitting comfortably at second place in the Western Pacific lineup, behind Los Angeles. No doubt some credit is to be given to three-time Stanley Cup champion goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stepping up as the face of this NHL expansion team. Another sign that Las Vegas can expect a great first season is that VGK also landed two veteran forwards James Neal and David Perron. These two have proven to be top scorers – right out of the gate.
The Golden Knights franchise is expected to bring lots of money to the local Las Vegas economy. Already the city’s pride is showing as locals sports Golden Knights bumper stickers, sweatshirts, and caps. It seems like everyone, from kids at school to their grandparents, is talking ice hockey, right here in the desert!
Silver and Black on the Move: NFL Football’s Raiders Relocating to Vegas
Right on the heels of the NHL announcement, Las Vegas landed an even bigger fish! The famed Oakland Raiders NFL franchise announced plans to leave Oakland, California and relocate to Las Vegas by the start of the 2020 NFL season. As America’s favorite sport, landing an NFL team has always seemed like an impossible dream for Las Vegas, but clearly our town has come of age. The team will open its 2020 season in an impressive new $1.9 billion stadium not far from the Mandalay Bay. NFL fans, and particularly the already substantial local Raiders fan base, are ecstatic. While it seems like forever before the first kickoff in Vegas, we’re all following our new team with pride and can hardly wait for that first tailgate party in our own home stadium.
Pro Sports are Kicking all Over the Las Vegas Valley
There seems to be no stopping Vegas sports now. Here are more pro sports that are already here or will start an upcoming season as a Las Vegas-based team:
Las Vegas WNBA(2018) – The WNBA recently announced the San Antonio Stars will relocate to Las Vegas effective with the 2018 season. Women’s basketball is an exciting and growing sport with fans across the country. Already very experienced with putting on sporting events, like boxing, MGM Resorts will promote the team locally, which means lots of excitement ahead.
USL Soccer (2018) – Beginning in 2018, Las Vegas will become home to a USL soccer team known as the Las Vegas Lights FC. With games to be played at Cashman Field, it will be the second team to play soccer within the Las Vegas city limits.
NASCAR – has a long history in Nevada where fans have enjoyed heartstopping action at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since 1972. A regular stop on the Nascar circuit, major race track records have been broken right here in Vegas, including the most laps completed by Jeff Gordon (4,551) and Jeff Burton’s 2-hour 13 minute win at the 2000 NASCAR Xfinity Series Race.
Triple-A Baseball’s Las Vegas 51’s Bag Brand New Stadium in Summerlin
Las Vegas is home to an MLB minor league franchise, the Las Vegas 51s, a Triple-A team in the Pacific Coast League affiliated with the New York Mets. Triple-A baseball, of course, is the last stop for baseball players before they are called up to play for the major league team (assuming they earn the call up with great performance!),so this is as close to major league ball as you can get. The 51’s, who started out as the Las Vegas Stars when they relocated to Vegas from Spokane, Washington way back in 1983, have been a source of great, affordable family outings to Las Vegans for years, playing great professional ball at Cashman Field which has just been turned over to the newly formed Las Vegas Lights FC soccer team. The 51’s were recently sold and have bagged themselves a brand new 10,000 seat, open-air stadium in the slightly cooler hills of Summerlin in the western outskirts of Las Vegas. The new stadium, designed by the Howard Hughes Corporation, will be completed for the 2019 minor league baseball season and should attract even more fans with the easy beltway and parking access, plenty of shade and upgraded amenities.
