"Downsize" Before You Move - Get Rid of Junk

Moving Is Hard Work, Don’t Make It Harder

Packing boxes for a big move is a lot easier when you’re not hauling extra junk. Before you move to your new home, it can help to take stock of what you own, and sort out the junk from the treasure. At Move 4 Less of Nevada, we know how tough a new move can be, so we’ve come up with this handy checklist to help you “trim the fat” on your moving inventory.

Sort it Out:

You don’t have to do it all at once (especially if you’re moving the entire house). Save yourself some stress my taking it one room at a time. Empty all the drawers and closets, and sort through everything, separating items into “keep,” “maybe,” and “junk” piles- or even better,  by theme so you can label each box by what goes where. You may be far from being a hoarder, but most households seem to accumulate excess stuff like old magazines, work or school documents that are no longer needed, etc.

It helps to avoid clutter and free your new home from lingering baggage. The less you have to move, the easier the trip will be, so cutting down on junk is a great first step to downsizing your possessions.

Culling the Herd:

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about family pets (or…cattle?). When you’ve separated out the junk from the treasure, you can begin throwing stuff away. Entire trash cans worth of old school assignments or back-issues of magazines can be found in many homes, and this excess stuff is just begging to be thrown away. Take the “maybe” pile you created in the first step, and figure out what stuff you really need and what you can afford to get rid of. The more unnecessary stuff you can edit out, the less clutter you will have and the easier your move will be.

What to Do with the Junk:

“Junk” doesn’t always mean “trash.” Possessions you can edit out of your in-home inventory can be sold for a little budget boost, which can help with the cost of moving. Extraneous items can be put up for auction on eBay, or laid out on your lawn for a good old-fashioned garage sale. Pawning valuable items that you don’t feel like keeping can also be an option, but make sure those aren’t things that will be missed in the long run.

Alternatively, you can also donate excess items. Less fortunate people, and outlets such as GoodwillBlind Center and the Salvation Army appreciate donated clothing, housewares, and other items. Donating is a great way to clear out your closet and do some good at the same time, and several agencies like those mentioned above offer free pick-up of the goods you are donating, to make it a bit easier for you.

Move it or Lose it:

When it comes down to it, just consider what you definitely want to keep with you, and what you can afford to give up. You may be far from being a hoarder, but you can always afford to give up some rarely-used items in the house. The less excess you have to move with you, the easier your move will go. When you’re absolutely ready for your move, contact Move 4 Less of Nevada, we’ll get you where you need to go!
